I awoke early, in the dark, to a dusting of snow on the ground, the sliver of a moon shining brightly. It was a glorious awakening. As I sat down with a steaming hot cup, facing East, the grandeur of Mt Baker already being illuminated by the dawn’s earliest light.

Ahhh! A smile spread across my face.

I inhaled peace, hope, joy …

Joy.

Exhale …

Joy comes in the morning.

Words of comfort by the Psalmist (30:5).

And it occurred to me that every morning is not so glorious. I mean, would joy come when it’s dark, starless and pouring rain for the fifteenth day in a row? I know how I would greet such a morning and it wouldn’t be feeling peace, hope or joy. I would scowl, turn my back to the firmament.

Maybe it, maybe this joy that comes in the morning (after a night of weeping) is dependent not on who offers it, but how willing I am to receive it? How willing I am to greet the day as a blank slate, as gift like a wrapped box with a golden bow, held out to me by the God of the universe, the God who created all things. And all I have to do it stop wiping the tears of the night before and hold out my hands to receive it … to receive the joy that is there regardless of my mood, my feelings, my perspective regarding rain.

Joy … it’s there in the morning.

What a morning!

Each glance out the window rewarded my eyes with a spectacular, changing sunrise.

Later, local friends on social media posted their viewpoints of that same glorious start to the day.

What a reward for being the early bird!

Speaking of birds …

Do you know why birds sing just before dawn? Scientists believe it’s to tell their mates that they made it through the night, as a way of saying, “I’m still here.” Maybe that’s why we sing, too, why we create art—as a way of saying, “I made it. I’m still here.”

Jeff Goins

I checked various sources of those knowledgable in the area of birds. The quote may or may not have scientific evidence of the reality of it’s message, but it still makes one ponder.

Maybe it makes one ponder because we read that quote with the Creator and know that his purposes for his creation … to worship Him … resonates.

The quote reminds me of Luke 19:40,

“I tell you,” he (Jesus) replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

All creation has one purpose, one calling, to praise and worship God.

May we awake each morning with the words of Reginald Heber in 1826 (almost 200 years ago),

Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning
our song shall rise to Thee

Something grabbed my attention as the Wonderdog and I walked up the sidewalk. It was the morning sun, rising over the mountains, shining with abandon.

When I reached the corner, then turned, walking toward it, I felt bathed in light. It is impossible to not stretch a smile across ones face when the sun is shining on it, serotonin flooding every cell of the body.

Then I turned again, south this time, and the sun disappeared by the line of trees, then the line of homes, leaving the street ahead dark, shadowed.

It was not until I turned again … west this time, but a street on an incline. With each step I knew that I was emerging from the darkness, the shadows. Once at the top of the street, I was again flooded in light.

weeping may stay for the night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning
Psalm 30:5

Rejoicing comes … after the weeping
Peace comes … after the conflict
Success comes … after the failure
Redemption comes … after the separation
The light comes … after the night

This morning of bright sunlight was preceded by a the dark night … the depth of the darkness was where the sun rose, piercing the night and flooding everywhere it touched with it’s light.

This is life.
