Last week I wrote about how just doing ‘good’ is not enough, in my post If I … but don’t have Love.

The day after I wrote it, I received a post from one of the people whose blogs I follow, and I thought how timely it was, for where my head was on the issue of love, and social justice.

I love the heart of this woman!

Ann Voskamp, book writer (One Thousand Gifts), blog writer ( http://www.aholyexperience.com ), mother to six, wife to the Farmer, child of God.

This post had me silently ‘amen-ing’ her thoughts at 6am, smiling and eyes filling with the fluid of the heart.

images-3Ann deals inwardly, and then with words, with the plight of too many young women around the world. She deals with the need for revolutionary change, and where that change can be birthed. She deals with the message of the world (one of good intentions … but … without … love) and with the message of the power of gratitude, of love … in making the change.

The post, How Women Can Get Really Radical For Their Sisters, moved me. I encourage you to take a read.

Dave and Susie are the bloggers at Double Hockey Sticks. They write about marriage, conflict … life.

I love reading their posts, and I feel I am becoming quite acquainted with this pair.

It always intrigues me when I read a post that seems to be exactly what I had been pondering, and that is the case when I read Why I Am Creating Margin.

explainmargin

The concept of margin is something that my hubby introduced to me a few years back when his medical doctor introduced him to the book, Margin, by Richard Swenson.

Like the crisp, clean space around a piece of loose-leaf paper, margin in all areas of our lives is not just a helpful, but a healthy thing to save, to plan for, to protect. In our lives today, margin is not a common concept.

We live financially from paycheck to paycheck.

We live physically medicating our ailments rather than get the rest, the physical activity, the healthy eating that could prevent some of those problems in the first place.

We live emotionally … wait, no we do not live emotionally! We live medicated due to stress and worry and fear that something might happen that stops us from ‘contributing’ to society.

We live tied to the clock!

All of this, margin-less living, means that we need to live our lives in such a way as to keep the machine going. This hinders us from living the passion-filled lives … in our jobs, in our communities (school, church, recreation), in our relationships with those we love, that our Creator breathed life into us to live.

Give the blog of Dave and Susie a read, or take a peek at the website of Dr. Richard Swenson, and consider what the margin in your life looks like.

cropped-life-inspirational-advice-watch-me-people-favim-com-5658391Today’s guest post is by a lady named Diane Owens, and her blog is called “It’s a New Day … a Journey of Health and Wellness.”

Diane spent the first year of blog writing asking a question each day for 365 days. I had been captivated by that concept, and have become a regular reader since. This year, as he blog name would indicate, she is focusing on improving her overall health.

The post I am featuring today, Just a Few Things to Ponder, is about her success so far. The part that captivated me is a Kate Moss (supermodel) quote that we have probably all heard, “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”

I admit, I have heard it and read it, and only felt the guilt of those words … on my abs., my thighs, etc. Diane, though, had the insight to see those words as dangerous.

As a ‘lifer’ in regards to trying to attain, maintain, and re-attain a healthier body, as well as being a mother, and one who works in a high school, I fully understand the struggle of health and weight. I fully understand the difficulty of living in a ‘Super Size’ world with waif’s on the cover of every grocery store magazine.

Diane has to come the realization that, “I now know that my body does not define me….it is simply my home that needs to be nourished properly….so I am able to live a long life and accomplish all of those other things that DO define me.” May we all come to this realization!

Check her post out! She even ends off with a few questions … good questions for us all!

a-picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words-3Some days there simply is no reason for words.

“Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent.”
Dalai Lama

“Silences make the real conversations between friends. Not the saying but the never needing to say is what counts.”
Margaret Lee Runbeck

“Half the world is composed of people who have something to say and can’t, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it.”
Robert Frost

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.”
Francis of Assisi

“A picture is worth a thousand words”

The guest post today is truly one of few words, and the only blog that I open every single day!

Russell Deasley is the creator of The very best top 10 of Anything and Everything and I want to encourage you to click on it!

I use this blogger’s creativity whenever a student I am working with is in need of a brain break, a diversion or simply a laugh. Mr. Deasley does use words, in his description of each image that he has included in his Top 10 of the day.

I could tell you more, but it is simply something that one needs to see for oneself.

531f61671f39c112deed15b9810d962cI do not remember being introduced to my guest post writer today, but I was just recently introduced to her writing by her mother.

My familiarity with this young lady started years ago. I have watched her grow up, and through my friendship with her mom, I have laughed at stories of her childhood, and prayed for her with things have gotten tough (aka. the happenings of life and living).

This young woman is beautiful, from the inside out! I have been cheered up by her generous, contagious, freely-given smile.

Recently her mom mentioned her blog, and I went to her site and was drawn in to her story weaving.

The post that captured me most was Living to be Beautiful. In this post Chelsea tells of a girl, in fairy tale style, describing her desperation to be beautiful.

Is is worth a read, as she tells the thoughts and feelings not just of her fictional character, but also of most women, at some point in our lives. It is in her writing from her own experiences and feelings that Chelsea writes most beautifully.

imagesI have been reading posts by Roger Tharpe for quite some time now. He is insightful and thorough in how he views what he reads in the Bible and how it relates to his life.

On his ‘About Me’ page, he says of himself, “My name is Roger Tharpe and I am a Christian. I love to blog and tell others about Christ in stories that could be shared by all.”

In this guest post, Roger writes of the story of Peter walking taking a plunge on the Sea of Galilee with Jesus, in What Do You Do When Jesus Doesn’t Calm the Storm?

We all have storms in our lives. Sometimes they are easily managed with relaxed breathing, and just taking it easy. Sometimes our confidence is shot, the skies are ominously dark, the waves seem aimed at us, and there is no steady hand for us to reach for in clear view … until we look up …

I highly recommend a read of this post, today.

The guest post for today came from a story that I read on Facebook. The story touched my heart, encouraged me and reminded me of how sweet, and how rare stories of integrity are in the media of today.

This is the story of a race, where the one who wins does so because another was willing to give up their rightful place, for the success of the one who was coming up short (hum, this might even have a parallel to the redemption of humanity through the Savior … oh, how I love a story where the theme is redemption! But, I digress 😉 ).

IVAN+12_redimensionarMeet, Ivan Fernandex Anaya, a Spanish runner, who might just be the best athlete to encourage your children to follow. I will not give his story away, just click on his name and enjoy a real, authentic feel-good story.

This is also a story of the power of social media over traditional media. Traditional media has done little to share this good news story, and we need to remember, as discerning individuals, that the traditional media has it’s own goals, it’s own worldview, it’s own agenda. Thankfully, through social media, we, the people, have the opportunity to share the stories that we believe need to be shared. I think this is a good reminder that not all that is new is bad.

colonoscopy-jokes-tax-increases-political-poster-1283526582A couple of months ago I received an email forward of a humorous depiction of a man’s experience having had a colonoscopy. I laughed so hard that I thought my insides would burst from the intensity of my giggling.

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that most of us should will experience. It is our best indicator of numerous things, but especially of colon cancer (also called colorectal cancer or bowel cancer).

According to the Canadian Cancer Society:

  • colon cancer is the third most common cancer
  • in 2012, an estimated 23,300 Canadians will have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 9,200 will die of it
  • it is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men and women combined
  • apx. 10,300 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 4,200 will die of it.
  • apx. 13,000 men will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 5,000 will die of it.
  • one in 13 men is expected to develop colorectal cancer during his lifetime and one in 28 will die of it.
  • one in 16 women is expected to develop colorectal cancer during her lifetime and one in 32 will die of it.

All of the above mentioned facts make the reason for the procedure no laughing matter. At the same time, avoiding this procedure, simply out of fear is also not funny, or wise.

In this guest post, Dave Berry weaves a humorous tale in his article, A Journey into my Colon.

I encourage you to click on the link, read, laugh, then consider how much less frightening this procedure can be when we consider how treatable this cancer is, when diagnosed early (plus he has a down-loadable certificate 😉 ).

Today I am featuring a guest post, who is not a guest.

The guest today is not the author, because the author is myself. Instead the guest is the main character in a fictional story that I have written.

About a year ago I began writing a fictional story that I thought would be a weekly feature for a few short weeks … really just a short story. What happened instead was the beginning of a relationship with this fictional woman, named Amara, for my readers, and for myself.

The story of Amara, her past and present, grew and has gone from a short story to the fictional novel that I am writing still.

Back around the New Year I mentioned in my post, Goals for 2013 – Things to Accomplish, that one of my goals was to complete the book that I had started writing. Since then I have had so many people ask me about the book, that I decided to feature it here, so that you could take a look. You will find a link from each segment to the next. There are twenty segments available in this story, so make that warm drink, put your feet up, and get to know Amara, Joy and their family.

Unfading

images-1Sometimes we encounter a story which we will never know with certainty if it was true or not, but we wish that it were true, for our own encouragement and for our own faith in mankind.

That is the case with my guest post today.

A few weeks ago when I finished reading this post, all I could utter was a sigh. I pondered at the ‘fairness’ of the story, I pondered at my own strength, and the depth of the love I feel for my own children.

Whether true or not, sit down, have a read and imagine that you would have the will to love your child to the same degree. It does not have to be a true story to truly motivate us to live better.
